Gastown, Vancouver's most historic district, originated from a solitary tavern established by John ‘Gassy Jack’ Deighton in 1867. Even now, it preserves its original charm and distinctive character. Victorian buildings host a vibrant fashion scene, carefully curated shops, unique art galleries, and some of Vancouver's finest dining experiences. Here are some of our favorite things to do and see in Gastown.
Things to do
A visit to this iconic neighborhood should begin with a leisurely stroll along Water Street. Here, you'll encounter a charming blend of historic buildings, cobblestone streets, the famous Steam Clock, and vintage lampposts covered in flowers. Make sure to stop off at the gastown steam clock which chimes off every 15 minutes!
Food & Drink
Monaco Cafe, located at 356 Water Street is one of our favorite coffee shops to go to while in Gastown. Loaded with fresh pastries, sandwiches & serves fresh gelato this is a must while in Gastown. If you are looking for something a bit more relaxed Café Kitsuné is your answer. You can enjoy soft-scrambled eggs, sandwiches, and a smoked salmon Croque madame from 10 am until closing time along with cheeseboards, variety of coffee blends and some refreshing wine!

Looking for more of an evening meal then head to LOCAL on 3 Alexander Street. This restaurant has a large patio area allowing you to soak in some sunshine while enjoying some of the pub-style food and selection of craft beers. We also recommend Pourhouse just located on 162 Water St this restaurant boasts a wide selection of old-fashioned cocktails, a mouthwatering menu & a happy hour from 3 - 6 every day. Some of our other favorites include Tacofino, The Old Spaghetti Factory, Al Porto Ristorante
Shopping
If you're limited on time for shopping in Vancouver, Gastown is the neighborhood you shouldn't miss. It offers a blend of traditional souvenir shops and art galleries, alongside numerous independent fashion boutiques and contemporary gift stores. Whether you're shopping for yourself or searching for souvenirs, Gastown provides a variety of options.
